Like It Or Not, Lawyers, We Are Salespeople

September 1, 2011

Like it or not, we are salespeople.  Sales is about advocating.  As lawyers, we are always advocating.  We’re advocating to get clients, we are advocating to keep clients and we are advocating on behalf of our clients.

When I’m Queen, this is a concept that will be taught in law school, along with marketing and a few other practice building gems, but for now we just have to share amongst ourselves and look for guidance from parallel industries.

The video below from Career Confidential and the related post, The Only Job Search Tip You’ll Ever Need, are both outstanding explanations of how the job search process translates to a sales process, and how you can leverage this mindset to help you make your next career move.

Yes, we rarely write thank you notes in our industry anymore after an interview (pity), but don’t get hung up in the details.  The bigger picture of Peggy McKee’s message is good stuff not to be missed.

Happy sales!
